  • * there's a letter here addressed to you:dddressed是过去分词;位于所修饰的名词后面的过去分词短语,相当于一个省略的定语从句。这里的短语等于which is addressed to you。 The people invited to his farm were his friends of college days. The problems discussed at the meeting remained unsolved. * chickens and cows and all:在不耐烦继续明确列举一系列事物时,可用and all表示“等等”;还可以说and so on/and so forth/and everything/and what not等。 * He never married. He never got over it也是同样的意思。 *本集中有不少具有一定习语性质的介词短语及类似介词的副词短语,举例如下: address( a letter) to/ be in love with/ get over something/ be popular with/ (one's heart) be with/be at (the reunion) / be full of/ sleep over(Saturday night) / be on the house/ be on the left/ make yourself at home/ pick up (a surprise)/pass away/find out about/(would not…)for the world/for goodness' sake/have a look around/ it's over yonder/ keep along this road/ fill 'er up/ count out thr change等。 又如:unthinkable/uncountable/unrecognizable/unmentionable/unchangeable等。 (挂念) Richard came home late and was sorry he missed Max. (没有赶上) He went to the bus stop to meet you. You must have missed each other on the way. (未遇上) Richard didn't miss his bag until he was home. (感到丢失) It's the first door on the left. You can't miss it. (找不到) He shot at the bird and missed.(未击中) Robbbie was angry he missed Alexandra's call. (未接到) They missed a good opportunity to buy a farm. (错过) I didn't see the film and I didn't miss much. (It) Sounds like fun. (It was) As simple as that. (Do) You think so? (There's) No charge for the cleanup. (And…) will make twenty.(这里省略的主语是最后加上去的找头的钱数。如最后加上三枚十美分硬币,就等于说 And thirty cents will make twenty。) (You) Can't miss it. (I) Have gone to the railway station. (I will be) Back soon with a surprise. (He's) Always full of surprises. (I have)retired and moved to New York. (You're as) Beautiful as ever. (I'm) Sorry to hear that. As simple as that. He's lived around here almost as long as I have. He's not as lucky as I am. 但 As(So)long as… As long as we keep to this road, we won't get lost. He would be all right as long as he could have his birthday party. You won't feel cold as long as the fire is going.
