The mailman just dropped some mail in our box, Grandpa.
Probably a lot of advertising and bills.
Why don't you write to me, Robbie,
so I can get some interesting mail?
You were right, Grandpa.
Advertising, bills, bills, advertising.
Yes. It's just like I said, Robbie.
Nothing interesting.
You won't believe it, Grandpa,
but there's a letter here addressed to you,
Mr. Malcolm Stewart, and it looks like a personal letter.
Oh, it must be a bill.
I don't think so.
The return name and address is
Pete Waters, RFD Number 1, Chesterton.
You're joking. Pete Waters?
Pete Waters, RFD Number 1, Chesterton.
You know him?
Do I know Pete Waters?
You bet I do!
He was my roommate in college.
He visited with Grandma and me in Florida
about five years ago.
What does he say?
Is he OK?
Yeah, he's fine.
Just fine.
He's writing to invite me
to spend a weekend with him at his farm.
He's planning a get-together
with two or three other college friends.
A kind of a fifty-year anniversary reunion.
Sounds like fun.
Fifty years? Wow!
It sounds like fun to me, too, Robbie.
What kind of farm does he have?
I've never been there, Robbie,
but he has chickens and cows and all.
That means fresh eggs and fresh milk.
Does he have a family?
No, he doesn't, Robbie.
He never married.
He's not as lucky as I am
to have a family and grandchildren.
I'm a lucky man.
How come he never got married?
That's a good question, Robbie.
A very good question.
He never married because
the girl he was in love with in college married someone else.
As simple as that.
He never got over it.
He must have loved her very much.
Yes. Very much.
Lillian Winters.
She was in our class.
And what happened?
She was in love with Donald McGrath,
the quarterback on our football team.
Football players are always popular with the ladies.
She liked Pete, and they went to dances together.
But her heart was with Donald.
Did he ever get over it?
No, he never did.
Where is she today?
I don't know.
Maybe Lillian will be at the reunion.
You think so?
Pete's full of surprises.
I wish I could go there with you, Grandpa.
What do you think the surprise will be?

Won't it be exciting to see all your college friends there again?
It is already.
I'm kind of excited about going now.
Next weekend ...

mailman：邮递员，英国常用postman。近年来由于女权运动者反对含有性别区分的词汇，因此常改称mail carrier。
advertising：letters or other papers calling attention to products or services in order to sell them; advertisement. 广告；促销宣传品。
bills：statements of charges, or costs. 账单。
plant：种植。
There's a letter here addressed to you. 这里有一封信是寄给你的。
return name and address：回信用的姓名和地址（通常就是寄信人的姓名、地址）。
RFD：rural free delivery.（邮件的）乡村地区免费递送。This is a mail delivery service for rural areas, places that are far from big cities. 这是对远离城市的乡村地区免费递送邮件的服务项目。
You bet I do! = Of course I do! = I certainly do!我当然（认识他）。这是美国口语的用法，表示“当然”，“毫无疑问”的意思。
roommate：a person with whom you share a room or an apartment住在同室的人。
get-together：a friendly informal meeting for enjoyment. 联欢会，聚会。
reunion：a meeting after a long seperation. 重聚，（同班同学高校后的）重聚联欢会。High school and college reunions are common. Students from the same class often plan these gatherings, or social meetings, many years after graduation. 高中和大学时的同班同学在毕业多年后常安排重聚或重聚联欢会。
How come he never got married? = Why didn't he ever get married? 他为什么一直未结婚呢？ How come is an informal way to ask why. How come是用来问“为什么”的非正式说法。与其它问句不同的是，How come句用的是叙述句型。试比较下面的句子： Why did he write you this letter? How come he wrote you this letter?
He never got over it. 他始终未能释然于怀。
He must have loved her. =It is clear that he loved her. 显然他（那时）很爱她。Here, Robbie believes that Grandpa's friend loved the young woman because he hasn't married anyone else. 此时，Robbie相信祖父的朋友爱那个年轻女人，因为他未和别人结婚。
quarterback：（橄榄球赛中指挥反攻的）四分卫。
I wish I could go. 我要是能去就好了。动词wish后接表示虚拟语气的从句时，意思是“但愿，要是……就好了”。从句中的动词用过去时。例如： I wish I were young again.我要是能返老还童就好了。 We wish he could come. 他要能来就好了。
You never know. = It is impossible to guess the future. （将来的事）你是无法预料的。
sleep over：to sleep at someone's house for one or more nights. 在别人家里睡一到几个晚上。
reading my mind：understanding my thoughts. 知道我在想什么，看出我在想什么。
