- * All you do is clip it around under your collar. all后面带定语从句时,关系代词that常省略。
That's all I know. Don't ask me any more questions.
This is all I wish to hear. Please don't say anything more.
All he knows is how to make money buying cheap and selling dear.
For all I know, he may be still alive somewhere.
或all the people who…。
* I'll lend you mine. 物主代词后面省去名词时,要用其名词形式,即mine,yours,his,hers,ours,theirs,然而后面有名词时又不使用其名词形式。如:
Ours is a big family.
If your bicycle is broken, you can use mine.
His room is upstairs, while mine is downstairs.
I haven't got a suitable tie. Can I borrow one of yours?
* I'm supposed to be worried about my daughter: 在be supposed to do (be) 中,supposed的意思是“应该,预定,据信(但自己有保留)”,和“究竟是(有怒意)”等。
Children are not supposed to watch such TV programs.
When are they supposed to get married?
He was supposed to be a very rich man from San Francisco.
You just called me a dog in the manger. Now, what's that supposed to mean?
* He gave them to me to hold on to. hold on to something
The boy held on to the oar and saved himself from drowning.
Hold on to my bag when I go and get us some ice-cream.
The old widow managed to hold on to the house that her husband left her.
He held on to his dream of becoming a great artist.
The old man held on to his principles though others gave them up.
Hold on a moment, please. I'll call him out.
Hold on a little longer. The market is looking up.
许多末尾音节轻读的以-our结尾的词都是这样,如:glamour,glamor /ardour,ardor/odour,odor/humour,humor/favour,favor/flavour,flavor等。
* There you go.
There you go, a medium-rare steak./There you go, forty cents change. Just a bit of rouge on the cheeks…there you go.
There you go, didn't I tell you so?/There you go. They're going to accept the offer after all.
There you go again----you know I don't like that song you're always humming./There you go----complaining about the prices.
至于Here we go./Here goes,前面已讲过,意思与此相近。
* the“Wedding March”:常用的有两个,一是门德尔松在歌剧《仲夏夜之梦》中所撰,一为瓦格纳的歌剧《洛亨格林》的插曲,前者欢快激情,后者庄严肃穆。读者可从录像片的伴乐中猜出是哪一首。
* You're about to become Susan Bennett…: be about to是表示将来状况或行动的一个万法,与be going to类似,意思更强调“马上就要”,不像be going to更多强调“预定或准备要”。在美国英语中,I'm not about to表示不愿意,如:
I'm not about to walk five blocks in the rain to see that film.
此外,还希望读者注意以下各种表达将来的方法及其相互间的区别:to be to do/to do /to be doing/shall (will) be doing/shall (will) do,以及be on the point of doing等。
